Gamification at PENZ 2016!

Today I had the privilege of presenting at the Physical Education NZ National Conference on the topic of gamification. Gamification is the application of game mechanics in non game contexts, which in turn can help boost motivation and increase engagement. Check out my intro videocast on the topic.

It was the first time speaking on the topic so was a little unsure on whether I had covered the content in a way that would suit the target audience, particularly as there were very few teachers who had any sort of experience incorporating aspects of video games in their classrooms. The feedback I received afterwards was fairly positive, so I will continue to tap away and develop the presentation for any other speaking opportunities on the topic.

I think as teachers we are far too quick to dismiss anything video game related being of value in our classrooms, which is fairly sad. I firmly believe we can take a lot from video games, and I encourage teachers to consider how they could incorporate aspects of gamification in their classrooms. The following books have some great information on the topic: The Gamification of Learning and Instruction by Karl M. Kapp, Gamify your Classroom by Matthew Farber, and my favourite is Actionable Gamification by Yu-Kai Chou.

I loved being able to gamify my presentation which utilised the game mechanic #FOMO Punch. By offering a reward (Kindle version of Yu-Kai Chou’s book Actionable Gamification) if participants correctly counted the number of game mechanic badges, I hoped that the “fear of missing out” would encourage people to engage more with the presentation, maintaining awareness throughout as the waited for the next badge to appear! At the end of the presentation I had a QR code on a slide linking to a google form asking for the answer and the participants name and email address, first correct answer won.

It seemed to work and I was happy to be able to send a copy of Actionable Gamification to Joanne Smith from Aotea College! Well done Jo!
