Carl is the go-to guy for Gamification and flipped learning in New Zealand. His approach to learning and education have transformed engagement, motivation and behaviour in both junior and senior classes.
Carl has spoken at a number of conferences both within New Zealand and overseas. His speaking engagements have included keynote deliveries as well as hands on workshops. Recent speaking engagements

  • November 2017 – Super 8 Conference (Hastings, New Zealand) – Guest speaker

    Carl took this opportunity to explore why flipped learning is one of the most powerful tools physical educators have at their disposal. He described why we need to look past the content creation and how to successfully repurpose our classroom time.

  • October 2017 – Connected PE Conference (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) – Masterclass presenter

    Carl shared his passion for gaming and how he incorporates aspects of gamification in his classes. He then paired this knowledge with practical games and activities that teachers could take away and implement with their classes.

  • July 2017 – Physical Education New Zealand Conference (Tauranga, New Zealand) – Presenter

    Carl contributed in two sessions. The first involved pairing game mechanics with practical applications of game mechanics in the classroom. The second involved sharing his involvement with the Sport in Education project and sharing some literacy and numeracy tasks he had developed.

    Carl explored some of the theory behind Gamification, linking them to real world examples and providing suggestions for implementing them within health and physical education.

  • July 2016 – Physical Education New Zealand Conference (Palmerston North, New Zealand) – Presenter

    Carl explored some of the theory behind Gamification, linking them to real world examples and providing suggestions for implementing them within health and physical education.

    He also contributed in a group workshop surrounding his involvement with Sport in Education.

  • June 2016 – The Connected PE Online Physical Education Conference (Web based) – Presenter

    During this webinar, Carl described exactly what flipped learning in physical education is, why you should flip, and ways you can go about flipping your own classes.

  • September 2015 – ACHPER Tasmania State Conference (Tasmania, Australia) – Keynote presenter

    During this keynote, Carl described exactly what flipped learning in physical education is, why you should flip, and ways you can go about flipping your own classes.

    He then proceeded to challenge the status quo of the traditional approach to education, exploring how the flipped classroom empowered students and focused on building positive relationships.

  • July 2015 – Future Learning Environments Conference (Auckland, New Zealand) – Presenter

    During this session Carl introduced the concept of Flipped Learning and described how to go about introducing it within the classroom and the tools and strategies that help make the process successful.
